On the Air

In 2001, Friends of Ernest sponsored a weekly radio show called Uncommon Sense hosted by Chris Shugart and broadcast on Santa Cruz station KSCO. Chris discussed a variety of social and political subjects and took phone calls from listeners. By 2002, Uncommon Sense had moved to Salinas radio station KION.

Political Campaign

In 2002, Al Shugart decided to run for Congress in the 17th District in California. Dismayed by how dysfunctional our government had become, Al became a qualified candidate for the No Political Party. "It’s time again to protest," he said, "We have to elect an independent who accepts no campaign contributions." To this end, candidate Shugart pledged not to accept any campaign contributions. Al laid out a three point plan he intended to put into place should he be elected to office. Shugart proposed to 1) Determine what a Congressman does; 2) How a Congressman does it; 3) Report back his findings. Al also made one firm campaign promise. He promised that before he voted on anything, he'd read it first.
