Church PR hasn’t changed a bit in decades. Meanwhile, criticism, exposes, and negative news regarding Scientology has evolved into an established part of mainstream culture. The Church’s tactics are so stale and archaic that they likely create more harm than good.
The Emmy winning documentary “Going Clear” is going to be a hard act to follow. But British broadcaster Louis Theroux hopes to make some waves with “My Scientology Movie” that premiered at the London Film Festival on Oct. 14. In this interview from the Hollywood Reporter, Theroux discusses the making of his film and speculates on how the Church of Scientology might respond.
One way to guarantee the success of “My Scientology Movie” would be for the Church to do what it usually does in these situations: launch an aggressive attack of black PR and assorted dirty tricks against the filmmaker and his film. That kind of publicity can only help promote the movie and dig an even deeper hole for the Church. It happens every time. When it comes to PR, the Church of Scientology has always been its own worst enemy.
